“NOT THAT WAY.” Ronnie grabbed onto Wade’s arm when he would have gone into the little girl section of the department store. “I see the tween section farther down.”

“Tween? She’s ten, remember?” Wade got a whiff of Ronnie’s sweet perfume and allowed himself to be led past racks of little girl clothes.

“Tweens are the few years before they officially become teens.” Ronnie stopped in front of a display of skirts. “Here we are.”

Wade placed a hand over his heart, as if he were having a heart attack. “You’re supposed to be helping me. I bet all the skirts here are way too short for Ginny. Not to mention, it’s barely February, and she’d freeze her tush off. Isn’t there a dress code at school? Shouldn’t you be enforcing it?”

“Calm down.” Ronnie removed his hand from his chest, giving it a squeeze before letting go. “Don’t panic. I meant, this is the section for Ginny. It looks like they have their first shipment of Easter dresses on the next rack.” She dove right in, the same way she’d done earlier at the feed store when picking out a shirt for him.

Wade hung back and let her work. Admittedly, there was something hypnotic about watching Ronnie shop. She was quick and ruthless but also charming, biting her lower lip when she considered an item, wrinkling her nose when rejecting one.

“How about this?” Ronnie held up a bright orange dress with a big yellow sash. That dress said, “Look at me!”

“Can you see Ginny running around the playground in that?” Wade shook his head. “That’s something you would have worn as a kid.”

“You’re right.” Ronnie gave it another critical look, smiling a little. “In fact, if it was in my size, I might wear it today.” She returned it to the rack and continued sorting. “What about this?” She held up a pastel blue dress with a busy pattern of...

“Are those sheep?” Wade held up his hand in the universal gesture for stop. “I don’t think Ginny’s gonna like that. She wants to feel adult.”

“You’re right. There’s a definite kindergarten vibe here.” Ronnie resumed sifting through options. “And by the way, do you see how much I’m learning about what you and Ginny are looking for? It’s the same as me trying to find you the perfect woman.”

“There is no perfect woman.”

She paused her search, gaze connecting with his. “How right you are.”

There was approval in her tone. He smiled. “I’m a wise man, just like my momma.”

“But you’re metaphorically sitting on a rocking chair in the shade watching life pass you by.” Ronnie tsked. “If there’s one constant in life, it’s change.” She paused, perhaps caught by the depth of her own words. “Anyway, you need to be moving forward, not sitting in your rocking chair.”

“Never knock a good rocking chair, just like you never knock a good horse.”

They’d been friends for so long that their banter felt comfortable, like climbing into a much-used broken-in saddle. Conversation with a woman had been missing from his life for too long.
